Universal Credit

Tuesday, 24th February, 2015

Following the launch of Universal Credit in pilot areas, the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) has announced the locations and timing for phase one of the national roll-out, with several areas in Scotland being included.

What is Universal Credit?
Universal Credit is a new benefit that aims to make work pay by ensuring claimants are better off in work. It aims to promote personal responsibility to actively seek work and increase earnings, while continuing to provide support for those who need it most.

Universal Credit will eventually replace the following six main working age benefits:
- Income based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Income related Employment and Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Working Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
- Housing Benefit

Universal Credit is administered by the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) via Jobcentres.

The Roll-Out of Universal Credit
Universal Credit is being introduced in stages across the UK. Expansion of the scheme to all Jobcentres and local authorities will take place during 2015/2016. Between February and April 2015 it is intended to roll it out for new claims for single people in 150 new Jobcentres including North Ayrshire.

How Will it be Paid?
In the majority of cases Universal Credit will consist of a single, monthly payment which is paid in arrears directly into the claimant's account. Couples living in the same household will receive one monthly payment between them. In most cases, housing costs will be paid directly to the claimant as part of the single Universal Credit benefit payment.
