Damp Puts off Most Property Hunters

A survey carried our by gocompare.com found 70% of people would not want to move into a home with damp patches and stained walls or ceilings. This came in ahead of the property being in a general state of poor repair, which was raised as an issue by 63% of respondents.

The organisation's survey was carried out with potential home buyers, but its findings are relevant to the letting industry as the same issues are likely to influence tenants when choosing a place to rent.

Lack of a garden, bad smells and no parking space, completed the top five property turn-offs; while unfinished building work, small rooms, a small kitchen and poor quality DIY all contributed to the list of biggest property turn-offs. 

Ben Wilson of Gocompare home insurance commented: "Overgrown gardens, grubby, cluttered rooms can be tell-tale signs that the property has been unloved and essential maintenance and repairs have been ignored."

He said the best way to ensure a property attracts interest is to put it on the market "clean, fresh smelling and tidy."

Some of the other put-offs revealed by the survey included an outdated kitchen or bathroom, both of which were highlighted by 25% of people respectively.

Just under one in five respondents said they would be deterred by artex or textured ceilings, while 18% felt the same about plastic windows. Dated or over-the-top decor was highlighted as a negative by 14% of people.

This research follows on from a study by Ocean Finance, which found safety is seen as the most important consideration when people choose a home to rent or buy.

Some 60% of people highlighted this as a top concern, while being in a quiet area, parking availability and proximity to family and transport links were also cited as key things potential renters or buyers look out for.
